2.3.6 NFS Installation

In order to install via NFS you must have a supported network card installed in your computer. The first step in the NFS installation is to choose the driver that supports your network card. In most cases you will be offered the opportunity to supply additional parameters to assist the kernel in communicating with your card. The majority of the time these parameters are not needed. However, there is the possibility that probing your hardware might hang the installation. If this happens you must restart the installation and try additional parameters. (See section B for some examples of module parameters.)

Next you must configure TCP/IP networking to gain access to the NFS server you will be installing from. Figure 2.7 gives an example of the data requested by this step of the installation. This information will only be used for the installation process. You will be asked for permanent TCP/IP information later. This feature allows greater flexibility for those who want to install from a network other than where the machine will `live'. When you enter the IP address the installation program will attempt to fill in your netmask for you based on the value entered in the IP field. When you accept or change the netmask and press ; the network and broadcast addresses will be filled in based on the IP and netmask. The structure of your network determines the accuracy of these values. If you need to make changes, simply use and to move the highlight to the field you want to modify, over the incorrect information and retype the correct values. Move the highlight to the ``OK'' button and toggle the button to continue.

After configuring the IP address information you will be asked to supply the domain name of the workstation. This information will be carried to the next line, where you prepend the hostname to the domain name, resulting in the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) in the Hostname field. Values for Gateway and Nameserver will be supplied based on information from the TCP/IP screen. If this information is inaccurate you can make changes here in the same manner as in the TCP/IP configuration screen. See figure 2.4

Next, you must enter information pertaining to the NFS server. You can enter either the name of the NFS server (if a nameserver is properly configured) or the IP address of the NFS server. You must also supply the path to the exported Red Hat installation directory on the server. (Figure 2.5
