2.1 Before You Begin

The first step in the install process is to obtain the most recent errata sheet for your version of Red Hat and an up-to-date version of the Red Hat FAQ. The errata will have the most recent information about the current Red Hat distribution and the FAQ contains answers to Frequently Asked Questions about Red Hat Linux. You can obtain a copy of the errata and the FAQ by sending email to:

errata@redhat.com
faq@redhat.com

The subject line and message body are ignored and can be left blank. You can also get a current copies from our World Wide Web site by pointing your browser to:

You need to collect some information about your system and (if you're on a network) your site before you begin installation. If you will be connected to a network, be sure you know your IP address, network address, net mask, broadcast address, gateway IP address, and name server IP addresses. If you don't know these values, ask your network administrator for them.

If Linux will coexist on your machine with   OS/2, you must create your partitions with the OS/2 partitioning software. This is vitally important. During the installation, do not create any new partitions, just set the types properly for your Linux partitions. If you plan to use LILO (the LInux LOader) to boot your Red Hat Linux system see section 2.3.19 for guidelines that might affect your partitioning plans.

Please read all of the installation instructions before starting! This will prepare you for any decisions that need to be made and should eliminate any potential surprises.
