2.3.19 LILO Installation

You should install LILO to boot your Linux system, unless you do not want to overwrite your Master Boot Record (MBR) and you have another way to boot your Linux system. Installing LILO is quite safe and is recommended.

If you do not want to install LILO select ``SKIP'' and press .

If you choose to install LILO, you are asked where you want to install LILO on your hard drive. On most systems, you will want   to install to the MBR of the first physical disk. Some people using ``Boot Manager'' from OS/2 or something similar might want to install LILO to the first sector of the root partition.

Here are the rules of where your root partition must live if you want to install LILO on a hard drive:

  1. If you have 2 (E)IDE drives, your root partition must live on one of them. This also includes any (E)IDE CD-ROM drives on your primary controller. If you have one (E)IDE hard drive, and one (E)IDE CD-ROM on the primary controller, you must install your root partition on the (E)IDE hard drive.
  2. If you have 1 (E)IDE drive and SCSI drives, your root partition must live on the (E)IDE drive or the SCSI drive that is at ID 0. Other ID's will not work.
  3. If you have SCSI only, your root partition must live on a drive at ID 0 or ID 1. Other ID's will not work.

Next you will be asked if you want to boot another operating system from LILO. If you do, answer ``YES''. If not, answer ``NO''. If you answered ``YES'', you must now specify what type of partition to use. Continue by telling it what exactly you want to boot. After you have completed LILO installation your system will reboot.
