Subject: Projects... volunteers?
X-Listprocessor-Version: 6.0b -- ListProcessor by Anastasios Kotsikonas
Status: RO

I've fallen slightly behind in everything, I apologize. The final
0.93 release and a preliminary dpkg won't be much longer. In the
meantime, I need volunteers for a few projects.

BTW, no one contacted me about package-specific documentation.
Please, please, please send me a short note if the package(s) you
maintain have documentation suitable for inclusion in our set of
manuals.

And now...

* I want to bring up the subject of a bug reporting and tracking
system again. I would very much like to have one setup by the release
of 0.94, if possible.

* Is there any interest in a structured testing environment such as
Matt Welsh brought up a few weeks back? I would like to talk about
that, too, if there is interest.

* I'm going to release new versions of the files found at sunsite in
the `info' directory very soon. I need a volunteer to HTMLize them.

* The FSF is going to snail a copy of the Debian GNU/Linux CD-ROM
cover art to me. We have permission to use this as a logo. Does
anyone have access to a scanner that would be willing to scan it?

* More later, as I think of it...

And... speaking of projects, I would like to construct a file with
suggestions for smaller projects that could be done to help improve
Debian. Many people write to me and ask what they could do to help.
This file would give them some ideas.

An example of what might be included in this file is this:

   * fix xterm to write ut_host correctly to /var/adm/utmp and
write entries to /var/adm/wtmp and /var/adm/lastlog

If you have complaints about how certain programs work or useful
features that could be added to Debian, this is the place for them.

Here's what I have thus far. These are just examples; I haven't
really thought about it much yet. Please send additions to me.
Volunteers should contact me. As soon as we have a substantial enough
collection of ideas, I'll send them to debian-announce.

These are miscellaneous projects that could be done for the Debian
project. If you want to work on one of them or have a suggested
addition, please contact Ian Murdock < imurdock@gnu.ai.mit.edu>.

   * add a beep-only option to biff (`biff b') that would beep twice
when the user receives new mail instead of displaying the header
and first few lines of the message (I find the interruption most
annoying). The current (annoying) behavior should still be
   available.

   * fix xterm to write ut_host correctly to /var/adm/utmp and write
   /var/adm/wtmp and /var/adm/lastlog

   * write (or change) a chfn program that can change not only real
name in pw_gecos, but office, office phone and so on

   * write (or change) a chsh program that checks /etc/shells before
   changing the login shell

   * write a manual page for adduser

Thanks.
