Subject: Debian project status report
X-Listprocessor-Version: 6.0b -- ListProcessor by Anastasios Kotsikonas
Status: RO

For those of you ``in the dark'' about the status of the Debian
project reorganization, here is a brief report.

Basically, everything is going great. Everyone is working together
and doing their part. I would particularly like to thank Daniel
Quinlan and Jim Robinson for removing an enormous amount of burden
from my shoulders and accepting a great deal of responsibility.

And, in a few lines, here is what is happening:

   * All packages now have maintainers. I am still doing the base and
a few other packages. Most of the other packages are now main-
tained by other members of the project. Jim Robinson is in charge
of ``maintaining the maintainers'', and he has received a great
deal of help from Daniel Quinlan.

   * All package maintainers must follow certain pre-defined guidelines
     to ensure consistency across packages.

   * The original source package guidelines were put together by me,
and they have been made available to the package maintainers.
Daniel Quinlan is now working to improve them, and he will be
     making all future revisions.

   * The binary package guidelines are currently being constructed by
me. Mike Dickey and I are working on a C rewrite of dpkg. We
are changing quite a bit about how dpkg works, and the binary
packaging guidelines are being put together to reflect these
     changes.

I'll try to keep the debian-announce list members up-to-date as to
what is happening. Rest assured that everything is going very well.

Subject: DLA donations

For those that have mailed the DLA a donation over the past few months
and have wondered why the checks have not yet been cashed, it was not
until a few weeks ago that we actually had enough money to open a bank
account. We have now accumulated approximately US$400 in donations,
and we will be cashing the checks within the next few weeks (I'm in
the process of moving to Detroit at the moment :). I would like to
take this opportunity to thank those who have donated thus far,
especially Kevin Laws, whose donation of US$350 put us ``over the
top''.

More information on how to donate to the DLA will be posted within the
next few days. Once again, thanks to those that have donated thus
far.

Subject: A minor change...
X-Listprocessor-Version: 6.0b -- ListProcessor by Anastasios Kotsikonas
Status: RO

A few months ago Debian received a new ``official'' title. It was
intended to be made known with the next release, but unfortunately
entirely too much time has passed to wait any longer.

Previously we referred to Debian as Debian Linux; we are now calling
it Debian GNU/Linux. I still refer to it as Debian in most
situations. The distinction is the same as that between ``SCO UNIX''
and ``SCO''; most people generally refer to that as SCO, but in more
formal situations it is referred to as SCO UNIX.

Why the change?

First of all, the name Debian GNU/Linux emphasizes our close (and I
need not mention beneficial) relationship with the GNU project.

Secondly, there are too many people out there who somehow believe that
the Linux movement and the GNU movement are competing factions in the
free software arena; this is simply not true. This perception
concerns many of us. The name Debian GNU/Linux is more indicative of
the fact that Linux and GNU are compliments and not competitors. Look
at the facts if you disagree.

As mentioned in the subject line, this is a minor change. It should
not affect our day-to-day activities in any way. I just didn't want
anyone to be surprised when they download the next release and notice
``Debian GNU/Linux'' mentioned in a README file. :)
