The Desktop Linux Consortium (DLC) has developed an exclusive one-day event, hosted by Boston University, which will include the first program ever to offer an in-depth exploration of Linux on the desktop. The event will feature key open-source technologists who will discuss the emergence of the Linux desktop.
In response to the needs of our clients, we have developed a program that brings the open-source community of businesses and individuals together in a forum that explores why you need to incorporate open standards in your organization today; how open-source benefits your bottom line and provides enhanced security, reliability, and scalability in your IT infrastructure; and those issues that threaten the acceleration of Linux and Linux-based applications for the enterprise. These key issues and real-world Linux-based deployments will be presented.

Technical Sessions
Learn what applications are available today for your Linux desktop. These sessions
detail Linux-based technologies, applications, features, and tools providing specific
business functions, including running Windows and Linux together on the same network.
Presentations in this track can solve your problems and answer your questions about
what you can achieve by introducing Linux into your enterprise. These sessions present
the technical details of both current solutions and future possibilities.
Hands-on Demonstrations and Interactive Developer Sessions
These sessions provide the opportunity to get hands-on training, give you examples
of successful enterprise network deployments, and offer a development forum. Key
open-source project developers share their intimate knowledge by walking through
some of the issues you face and addressing specific implementation details.
Ask the Experts
Join the DLC, Bruce Perens, and other open-source leaders in an interactive Q&A
session at the end of the show. This closing session will feature a summary of the
topics covered as part of the conference and a frank discussion about the current
state of Linux. Community and media are invited to the interactive forum.

Tom Adelstein
Tom Adelstein works as a Linux consultant in Dallas, Texas. His current interest
lies with Linux in Government. He is currently maintainer of Project leopard a LAMP
eGovernment Database Project offering state and local governments a free open source,
web-enabled system for use in quickly setting up public information sites. The project
also allows use for government-to-government web sites as well. Project leopard
allows disconnected government databases to link through XML which has become essential
for homeland security and in protecting victims of domestic abuse in the judiciary.
Tom launched Government Forge, a Web site devoted to state and local governments interested in Linux and open source which is part of the Open Source Software Institute. In November 2002, Tom initiated the legislation for Open Source Software in Texas which resulted in Senate Bill 1579 filed by State Senator John Carona.
Tom is a Certified Public Accountant, a former Investment Bank and author of 15 Books and several hundred hundred articles in print and on the Internet. As an entrepreneur, he has founded six successful start-ups, three of which were software firms. He also sold and delivered the first Linux enterprise application for the S/390 mainframe to Winnebago Industries. Winnebago became IBM's first Linux Reference Account helping IBM gain traction early in their thrust into the Linux space. Tom's series for Linux Journal, "Linux Access in State and Local Government" has helped identified Open Source initiatives not previously known to the community.
Martin Echt
Dr. Martin Echt is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiology. He is a
Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a Member of the American College
of Physicians. He is on staff at Samaritan Hospital and St. Mary's Hospital in Troy,
NY. He is Chief Operating Officer of Capital Cardiology Associates, PC. He is Clinical
Director of Cardiology for Samaritan Hospital and Director of the Board for Northeast
Health in Troy. Martin's cardiology specialties include general cardiovascular disease,
echocardiography, congestive heart failure, and hypertension. He has recently moved
his office to Linux.
Nat Friedman
A long-time open source developer, Nat Friedman is a driving force behind Ximian's
product strategy. Nat raised $15 million of venture capital for Ximian in January
2001. Nat is a developer of the GNOME Foundation's proposal and charter and has
made significant contributions to the development of the Bonobo object model, the
GNOME architecture for creating reusable software components and compound documents.
Both a hacker and an entrepreneur since childhood, Nat's dynamic personality has
made him a natural leader and an important spokesperson for the Free Software movement.
Nat earned bachelor's degrees in Mathematics and in Computer Science at MIT.
Stacy Gildenston
Stacy Gildenston is the Director of Business Development for LPI, having worked
in international training and certification development for over a decade. Right
now, LPI is working within the United Nations and other international organizations
to develop a Linux Desktop certification. Stacy is also the Chair of Marcom for
the IT Certification Security Council.
Sam Greenblatt
Sam Greenblatt, senior vice president and chief architect for CA's Linux Technology
Group, is responsible for the company's cross-brand integration of Linux technology.
He joined CA in 1994 and has held senior management positions in cross-platform
product strategy and development. Prior to CA, Sam was chief technology officer
and vice president of research and development at Candle Corporation. He has also
held management positions at ARCO, Commodore International, and Arthur Andersen.
Mark Hinkle
Sam Hiser
Sam Hiser is a senior contributor and member of the Release Committee of OpenOffice.org,
the open source development community behind the office suite, OpenOffice.org 1.0.
From New York City he co-Leads the OOo Marketing Project and consults with Sun Microsystems,
Inc. on community management and marketing. Sam comes from the user's point of view.
He will talk about the OpenOffice.org Marketing and Native-Lang Projects: the promising
growth in language translation (localization, l10n) of the suite, and the future
of the desktop in a world of cheap hardware and wider appreciation of open standards.
He sees a global desktop market several magnatudes larger than today's in which
productivity is unleashed massively on the local level by "sub-commodity" software:
Linux, Mozilla, OpenOffice.org x.0 (along with its branded derivatives), and one
good PIM.
Tomonari Ikeda
Tomonari Ikeda is currently working for VA Linux Systems Japan KK (VAJ) and is part
of a marketing team of VAJ where he is responsible for defining VAJ's business strategies
and opensource policy. He is also in charge of running OSDN Japan, the most dynamic
community-driven media network on the web in Japan. He is an international speaker,
and he enjoys surfing and snowboarding in his spare time. Tomonari earned bachelor's
degrees in Computer Science at UC San Diego.
Jim McQuillan
Jim McQuillan has been developing solutions for customers, utilizing Unix and networking
since 1984 and has been involved with Linux since 1995. Jim has functioned as a
Chief Technologist for more than 18 years and is responsible for the successful
deployment of health care systems throughout the Northeastern United States. Additionally,
Jim is the founder of the Linux Terminal Server Project (LTSP), an open source project
which has received world-wide recognition as the standard method of deploying Thin
clients in a GNU/Linux environment.
Havoc Pennington
Havoc Pennington has been a Linux developer since 1998, starting with the Debian
project and becoming one of the earliest GNOME developers. In 2000 he started freedesktop.org,
a project to build shared specifications and infrastructure for the Linux desktop
as a whole. Havoc was the chair of the GNOME Foundation board of directors for the
first two years of its existence. Since 1999 Havoc has worked for Red Hat, most
recently as manager of the desktop development team.
Bruce Perens
Bruce Perens is a leader in the Free Software and Open Source community. He is creator
of the Open Source Definition, the manefesto of the Open Source movement in Software.
He's founder or co-founder of the Open Source Initiative, The Linux Standard Base,
Software in the Public Interest, and No-Code International. Bruce released his first
Free Software program, Electric Fence, in 1987. He is creator of Busybox, which
has spawned its own development community and is part of most commercial devices
using embedded Linux.
Bruce is series editor of the Bruce Perens' Open Source Series line of books with Prentice Hall PTR publishers. The books sell well in retail stores, even though their texts are released under an Open Source license. Bruce is Senior Research Scientist for Open Source with George Washington University's Cyber Security Policy Research Institute. Through his own research organization, he has a $50,000/year grant to work 1/4 time on the patent policy issues of standards organizations. He is an elected director of Software in the Public Interest, Inc.
Bruce previously spent two years with HP as Senior Global Strategist for Linux and Open Source, and was president of Linux Capital Group, a venture fund that specialized in Linux. He spent 20 years in the computer graphic animation industry, 12 of them at Pixar Animation Studios. He has a credit on the films A Bug's Life and Toy Story II.
Shuji Sado
Shuji Sado has been actively involved in the free software movement since 1993.
In 1998, he organized the first Linux developer conference in Japan. He co-founded
the Japan Linux Association in 1999 and served as Executive Director for two years.
In 2000, he established the Open Source Group Japan, the leading non-profit organization
of the opensource movement in Japan. He joined VA Linux Systems Japan KK in 2000
and holds positions of the chief manager of OSDN Japan division and the marketing
manager of VA Linux Systems Japan KK. OSDN Japan sites include Slashdot.jp, SourceForge.jp,
and japan.linux.com. Shuji received a Master of Engineering from Kanazawa Institute
of Technology.
John Terpstra
John Terpstra is an Executive Manager with proven skills in facilitating, mentoring,
presenting and analysis through all phases of business execution. John is CEO/President
with PrimaStasys, Inc. A company that mentors Information Technology companies and
facilitates profitable change. John has worked with The SCO Group (previously Caldera
Inc.) initially as VP Technology and most recently as Evangelist. He helped TurboLinux
launch back into the USA market place as VP Development and later as VP Community
Relations. Prior to moving to the USA in 1999 John founded and managed Aquasoft
Pty Ltd (Australia) for 10 years. John is a well-known contributor and visionary
in the open source community with a very active commercial focus. He is co-founder
of the Samba-Team, a member of the Open Source Software Institute Advisory Board,he
is active with the Linux Standards Base, the Free Standards Group, has served as
a steering committee member of the Li18nux (now OpenI18N), and currently serves
on the SPEC/SNIA (Storage Network Industry Association)Standards Group.
John Weathersby
John Weathersby is the founder and chairman of the Open Source Software Institute
[ http://www.oss-institute.org/ ], a U.S.-based non-profit organization dedicated
to the development and implementation of open-source software solutions within the
United States Federal, state, and municipal governments and academic institutions.
Weathersby serves as an advisor for open-source technologies to the National Technology
Alliance through the Rosettex Technology and Venture Fund and Sarnoff Corporation.
Mark Westerman
Community release manager of SELinux and Managing Partner for Westcam, Inc. Mark
has over 15 years of experience in all phases of computer network design, network
security, encryption technology, and firewalls as well as UNIX, Windows NT, and
Windows 2000 expertise. Mark has designed AIS level 3 security systems and network
security systems for NASA. He was the head security designer of one of NASA's AIS
3 network development environments. For the last 2 years he has been implementing
SELinux systems for use in connecting single computers to multiple security level
system for NASA.

Amy D. Wohl
Amy D. Wohl is Editor and Publisher of Amy D. Wohl's Opinions, a weekly electronic
newsletter. She previously edited The TrendsLetter and The Wohl Report. She also
maintains a weblog at http://amywohlweblogger.com. She is a columnist to VARBusiness
magazine; a contributing editor to Spectrum Middleware, and a frequent contributor
to the trade and general business industry conferences and seminars in the US.,
Canada, Europe, South America, Africa, Asia and Australia. She is especially well
known for her keynotes on the future.
