The Linux desktop took its greatest step forward today with the release of Helix GNOME 1.0 the final and most complete version of the GUI desktop for users, including more than 100 software packages and applications as well as an automatic updating system.

Without question, Helix GNOME 1.0 is the most comprehensive and easy-to-install suite of applications available to the Linux user in one complete package, said Nat Friedman, CEO and co-founder of Helix Code, while introducing the completed software application at the LinuxWorld Expo.

More importantly, the list of applications, offerings and services is potentially infinite through the use of Helix Updater, which provides one-click, real-time updates to the user's desktop.?

In fact, even prior to the 1.0 release, the Helix Updater has provided more than 3 million updates to Helix GNOME users since its introduction in March 2000.

In addition to being a user-friendly desktop, Helix GNOME 1.0 also ships with a complete software development platform, and the tools you need to write modern applications, said Miguel de Icaza, Chief Technology Officer for Helix Code and founder and leader of the world-wide GNOME project.

Despite its only recent introduction, Helix GNOME 1.0 is already being acknowledged as a standard user interface within the industry. Today IBM announced the availability of Helix GNOME 1.0 on its ThinkPad laptop.
