It is my pleasure to announce the release of AfterStep v1.0.
This release is the culmination of hundreds of hours of work from
many great people around the net, and I hope it will benefit
anyone who chooses to give it a try. So, without further ado,
here is the vital information.

  Title:             AfterStep
  Version:           1.0
  Date:              04MAY97
  Description: Powerful, Configurable X Window Manager
  Authors: Frank S. Fejes and Alfredo K. Kojima with help
                     from many across the net
  Primary WWW:       http://afterstep.edoc.com
  Secondary WWW:     http://afterstep.foo.net
  Primary FTP:       ftp://afterstep.foo.net/pub/AfterStep
  Tested Platforms: Linux, MkLinux, Solaris, SunOS, HP-UX, AIX,
                     Digital Unix, NetBSD, FreeBSD, BSDi, Irix,
                     NEXTSTEP, OS/2

     AfterStep is a continuation of the BowMan window manager which was
originally put together by Bo Yang. BowMan was based on the fvwm window
manager, written by Robert Nation. Fvwm was based on code from twm.
And
so on... It was originally designed to emulate some of the look and
feel
of the NEXTSTEP user interface, but has since taken steps towards
adding more useful, requested, and neat features. The changes which
comprise AfterStep's personality were originally part of bowman
development, but due to a desire to move past simple emulation and into
a niche as its own valuable window manager, the current designers
decided to change the project name and move on.

     Important features of AfterStep include:

1. Wharf: a free-floating application loader which can "Swallow" running
   programs and also can contain "Folders" of more applications.
2. Gradient filled TitleBars with familiar NEXTSTEP iconize and destroy
   buttons
3. Gradient filled root window PopUp menus which can be configured to
   accommodate different tastes and styles of management
4. NEXTSTEP style icons which give a consistent look to the entire
desktop

     While the only way to get a true feel for the interface is to sit
down and use it, checking out a few screenshots have never hurt the
process. Besides the two on the homepage at http://afterstep.edoc.com
there is an entire gallery filled with unique and interesting
depictions of what AfterStep can be made to do. The gallery can be
found at ftp://afterstep.foo.net/pub/AfterStep/desktops and I highly
recommend you take a peek.

     Happy Stepping!

	AfterStep beta4 is available for testing, we ask that everyone
interested in AfterStep try out this new release. All previous compile
time options are now --enable/disable options to ./configure - this should
make pre-packaging easier. Also an --enable-fixed has been implemented
upon request from Red Hat, who will be shipping the official AS in their
upcoming release [we hope without the AnotherLevel (m4) preocessing
confussion]. Also a reminder of the option "make uninstall.all"
introduced in beta3.
	A list of servers to obtain the _development_ release can be
obtained from http://www.afterstep.org/download.html.  Notice:
ftp.afterstep.org is currently undergoing relocation and is not being
maintained!
	If you find any bugs or such please feel free to mail to the
AfterStep mailing list (afterstep@linuxcenter.com) and/or using the
bughint script in the distro and mailing to the coordinators listed in the
Teams file.
	Also help can be obtained in #afterstep on efnet.

Thanks and enjoy. :)

The AfterStep Development team would like to announce the release of
stable version 1.6.6. Many new features have been added over release
1.4.x. These include:

	o additional support for jpg and png images;
	o support for pseudo-transparent Eterms (without Esetroot);
	o support of transparent images for Wharf Pixmaps;
	o support for transparent (shaped) titlebar buttons.
	o new border methods for startmenu;
	o system wide startmenu definitions with selective user
	  overrides;
	o nested folders in Wharf;
	o Wharf buttons can have arbitrary sizes;
	o added mini-pixmaps to startmenus;
	o added balloons;
	o added i18n internationalization support;
	o Perl scripts to automate the building and installing
          complete themes.

as well as easy compile for Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, AIX, OpenBSD, and
OSF/1 (via configure).

Source code and binaries can be downloaded from ftp://ftp.afterstep.org

Think you missed stable release 1.5.0? Well, think again! Starting
with this release, AfterStep is adopting the even-odd-stable-devel
version numbering scheme. Therefore, we are declaring work on AS
1.5.whatever to be development and 1.6 is the stable release of that
work. No new features will be added to 1.6. All new features will
be added to 1.7.x. As we can, bug fixes will be applied to the 1.6
tree in the form of patches and periodic snapshots.
